Without any doubt, one of the hardest things about growing from a solo entrepreneur to a small business is “let go”.  If you can do a task or a project yourself, why should you pay some else do to it?  The answer is always unfortunately driven by the reality of a tight budget.

Productivity wise, you can do more, focus more and expand more if you allow others to help.  You’ve frequently wished you had more time or even a clone “another you”, correct? You may have time to do it all, but are you doing it all well? Allowing others non-essential tasks lets you focus on what is truly critical for your business.  You get more time for what is most important to you and to your business.

Just because you’re good at something doesn’t necessary mean it’s the thing you should be doing. You want to be doing the things that drive your business forward. Consider it an added bonus, if that aligns with something you’re passionate about. Focus on the important stuff, the stuff that takes you one step closer to your vision. My vision is to keep simplicity and easy of use first when designing the app, which will allow the user to use the OfficeTime Time-Tracking App for its main functions and not get caught up in difficult technology. Let others help with the details, even if it costs you money; you may consider allowing others to do repetitive tasks such as data entry or highly-specialized tasks. It will provide you with a great payout.

OfficeTime is helped by about a dozen people across the world moving it forward, giving me more time to lay out a vision for simple, useful time tracking.  I’ve recently started working with a new virtual assistant (Taryn from /www.merrickmgt.com)

Yes, you can do it all yourself but you won’t get it all done. Do not procrastinate; set a budget for, define what you will allow others to do and search-hire the right partner. Contract out to that bookkeeper, that SEO guy, that designer and that techie. You’ll be more productive and more profitable. I must confess, it has been liberating to simply get stuff done.

Until next time,

Yours truly,

Stephen Dodd, Founder of OfficeTime
