Have you ever been offered something and agreed to do it, knowing that you weren’t fully committed? Between the time in which that “something” was offered and your acceptance of it, there was a brief hesitation in your voice, correct? You knew it was a good opportunity, but something in your gut said, “WAIT.” You bypassed the waiting part and agreed because you just couldn’t pass it up.
Many people know this situation and can remember that hesitation. Perhaps we should analyze what this hesitation means, and how it can affect future opportunities.
This gut feeling or hesitation can mean many things. Maybe you’re not ready to plunge into the deep end with both feet forward. Maybe you know you’re not fully qualified or capable to do the job. Or maybe you just don’t want to do the job, but know it will provide a good outcome if you do. By ignoring this hesitation though, most of the time it backfires and you’re left feeling resentful.
Instead of agreeing to this project or opportunity, try purposefully pausing. Assess the situation, the outcomes, your skills for completing the task, and the potential for you to realize that the best option is just passing on the opportunity all together.
A hesitation is intuitive. Our subconscious usually knows what we want before our brain does; so if you feel the pause, stop and analyze it before diving headfirst.
Until next time,
