ID-10040933As Will Rogers said, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” What could possibly be the key to a good first impression? Without any doubt, it is the firm, respectable handshake. For individuals trying to enter the workforce, a good first impression can often be an influential factor in getting your foot in the door.

When shaking someone’s hand keep in mind that you are often judged by the quality of your handshake. Follow these essentials for a quality handshake, and in turn a respectable first impression:

There is nothing worse than a dead fish of a handshake.  A limp hand presented lamely is a total loss – at the same time, however, you don’t want to break your new acquaintance’s fingers, so finding that nice equilibrium is vital.  A business-like handshake is always presented with your thumb up and fingers pointing toward the other person’s chest; you’re not on a basketball court, you’re in an office, so skip the fist bump.

Be aware of the length of the shake. Pay attention to social cues, especially if you’re with visitors from outside the country.  Don’t be that person who extends the handshake too long or pulls away too quickly. Be confident in yourself, the situation you find yourself in, and exude confidence through your handshake.

Maintain eye contact. Creating and maintaining eye contact may be the most importance aspect of a good handshake. Just as the pressure and duration of the shake exude confidence, so does eye contact. Show you your poise and work ethic, all in one moment.

In the end, a good handshake is completely determined by self-confidence. You must be confident in yourself and your abilities in order to impart such confidence into someone else. Appreciate the fact that you never get a second chance at a first impression and own the moment.

Until next time,

Yours truly,
