There are many waves to ride in Decision Making: simple, complicated or just pure gut decisions.  A decision is usually a selection of an option among “good options”; a “perfect” option should be considered a myth. Decisions, made by leaders who are focused on what really matters, have great impact. These decisions create opportunities, new situations and cultivate an environment where people and organizations are making an impact.

Clarity is the starting point in decision making.  There is no forward movement with impact unless there is clarity on what is most important, accompanied by a crystal clear understanding of why something is most important. Clarity on what and why are the items that the best and most successful leaders excel at.

In the trustworthy decision process,

leaders widen their options,

they reality-test their assumptions,

create a space for free roaming thinking before deciding and

physically and mentally prepare to face the ramifications’ of being wrong.

Being buried in research runs the great risk that forward progress could come to a screeching halt. We should only be brainstorming, researching, discussing, and taking time to contemplate when it really serves us in making the decision.

Through the years even top CEO’s had made “Gut Decisions”. These calls were based on the leaders’ ability to do so, their ability to understand the magnitude of such decisions and their ability to stay committed on their “Gut Decision”, one choice at a time.

DecisionsWhat is the decision on hand? Procrastination always comes at a cost.

Finally, ask yourself if the necessary decision is truly meaningful and the level of impact it will have and risk it will incur.  If it’s not a choice that involves great consequence, in the end, stop obsessing over it and just make a call!
