2014It’s that time of year. What are the New Year’s resolutions for your business? Resolutions will help you define what you’re goals are and get specific about what you want to accomplish in 2014.

Here are a few resolutions to help you get started planning your own.

  1. • Schedule time for planning and plan ahead. Most people know exactly what their daily tasks are, but do you make time for actually planning those tasks? More than just daily tasks, but future tasks should also be planned out and put on the calendar. Eliminating surprises will make your business more effective and productive.
  2. • Develop routines. There are many tasks that must be done in your business that repeat on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The job becomes much easier and done more efficiently when there is a set routine in place. Plan out how those tasks need to be done, and then follow the same system every time you do it. The task will become routine over time.
  3. • Commit to follow up. Many outcomes come from your initial plan, so be sure to follow up with them to make sure each part of your plan has been completed. This is where resolutions tend to die off because most people can commit to make a plan with great strategy, but following up with each task is the difficult part. If needed, delegate this task to someone in your business. Make sure that person gives you and the rest of your company periodic updates about how the job was followed through. This keeps everyone accountable for his or her part of the plan.
  4. • Update the office. The New Year is a perfect excuse to update the office. Has the printer been jammed for months? Fix it. Are your employee’s desks filled with old papers and junk? Now is the time to wipe the slate clean. Now is also a great time to update your filing system, policies and procedures that are outdated.

What will it take for you to make resolutions that last? Do you think these resolutions are obtainable and will be effective in your work environment? What is the number reason why your resolutions fail? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Until next time,

Yours truly,
