As the research in my previous blog Small Business Go Green For Profits shows, going green can be very profitable for your business. But most people get hung up on big concepts like solar panels, energy saving appliances, and fancy “green” gadgets that cost money upfront for the investment with the promise of being profitable in the future. Instead of getting caught up on big green initiatives, why not start small? Have each member of the office contribute one small task to your green initiative and start seeing the money flow in. Here are a few ideas to start:
- • Turn off all appliances at the end of the day. It’s much easier to come in to work and have all of the appliances you need for the day to already be buzzing, waiting for you to start the day. But do you know how much electricity you’re wasting by not powering them down? Check it out for a month- I’m sure you’d be shocked.
- • Telecommute. A great way to save money is to not have so many bodies physically in the office. Telecommuting is a great way to go green, particularly for people who drive to work, and it can be very beneficial to families with kids, meaning you won’t have to do much to convince your employees to work from home a few days per week.
- • Go Paperless. With all of the scanning options on your printers, smartphones, and tablets, there isn’t much need for paper documents. View all documents online and only print when it is absolutely unavoidable. This will help the environment and save you money on printing costs.
Is your office taking steps to “go green?” Do you have any great tips you’d like to share? Please comment.
