There are a number of self-proclaimed “time management gurus” out there. They all talk about the importance of planning out your tasks or not spending too much time on one thing. But what about when it’s all said and done? Just because a project is finished, doesn’t mean that your work is done. If you start a project on a Monday and finish it by Friday, you still have to start the next project the following week. With that in mind, it’s important to look back on how you spent your time during a project to figure out where you can save precious moments. Here’s a tip on how to analyze and manage your time spent on a project.

About an hour before the work day ends, get everyone together and evaluate the progress made that day on each task and project. Address any issues that need addressing such as too much time being spent on one project rather than another. With the final half hour or so, sit by yourself and look over everything. Are you where you need to be with everything? Are you ahead of schedule, behind schedule? Is the quality of work up to par?

Lastly, look back on your day and how you spent your time. Evaluate how effective you were at managing your time in order to get the most from it. Decide whether or not certain tasks are better for you to work alone on, work together with someone, or delegate to someone else. By evaluating your time spent, progress, and quality, you’ll be able to make adjustments the next day when you plan and prioritize. Consistently repeating this process of organizing, evaluating, and tweaking will help you optimize your time and effort, as well as that of your team members, for the maximum results.
