Having a Mission Statement is crucial to your business plan. Think of it as the company motto. It lets the consumer know who you are, what you stand for and how you can serve them.  It can also provide guidance and support to your employees, enabling them to help take your company in the direction you want it to go.

ID-10088237An important aspect of the Mission Statement for you to consider is whether to emphasize your long-term goals, what you expect for the future, or short- term goals, meaning where your company is now heading.  A long-term statement should be a broader view, which will outlast immediate changes.  For the short-term you should expect to revise your statement periodically as your company grows and evolves.  An outdated Mission Statement can have a negative impact on your business.

A clear and well defined Mission Statement is the key. The successful Mission Statement should be specific, and concise.  A Mission statement few sentences long is the most effective. An overly wordy statement can devalue the point you are trying to convey. You must phrase your wording in such a way that you will get across your mission without losing your focus. Remember, less complicated means more memorable.

A strong Mission Statement should also enable the employees to know where the company is heading. Keeping your employees up to date on what your company goals are is also a great way to maximize their potential. Asking input from employees to help revamp your statement is a great way to keep them in the loop. Knowing they are part of the overall mission is a huge motivator as well.

Taking the time to craft a good Mission Statement is an essential aspect of your entire business practice. Having a clear, concise Mission Statement will define your company.  It will not only emphasize your company’s values to the consumer, but may also help your company grow from within.  Keeping these simple points in mind can make the difference between a successful company and one that follow the rest of the pack.

Until next time
